Peru
Welcome to Peru!
Bienvenidos a Peru!
We take a closer look at the next country on our South America trip: Peru. It is certainly not the richest country in South America, but it should be a good average in terms of prosperity and diversity. A detour to the coast is just as much a part of it as an in-depth exploration of the Andes in the north-western part of South America. And of course, in Peru we follow in the footsteps of the ancient civilizations that lived in Peru for several millennia.
Last but not least, Peru also inspires with beautiful hikes through high-altitude national parks with impressive nature.
All blog posts from this exciting country are listed below. Have fun browsing and traveling with us!
Arequipa
Welcome to the white city of Peru: Arequipa. There are different theories about the origin of the name White City. One theory is that this name is derived from the sillar stone often used for houses. Another theory is somewhat less pleasant and goes back to the...
Colca Canyon
The next natural attraction we visit is the Colca Canyon near Arequipa. The valley begins beautifully but not very spectacularly near Chivay and gradually eats its way deeper and deeper to become the third deepest valley in the world. The Colca Valley, or Colca...
Cordillera Blanca
After several days of driving through rather barren, desert-like terrain on the north coast of Peru, we now travel from sea level directly to Huaraz at around 3000 meters above sea level. Huaraz is the largest town near the Cordillera Blanca – a mighty and most famous...
Cusco
We traveled on quickly from Nasca to Cusco – with two beautiful free campsites. The city is strategically located for our next exploration tours in Peru. However, the altitude is omnipresent here too – Cusco lies at around 3500 m above sea level. So, we spend the...
Huacachina Lagoon
There are real deserts here in Peru like we imagine them to be in Africa – surprising! Long, high dunes of soft sand pile up one after the other. First, we visited the natural oasis of Moron Lagoon. Here there is a small green oasis and wide sand dunes all around....
Lake Titicaca
At the end of our trip through Peru, we visit one last highlight: Lake Titicaca. Or is it not the end of our trip through Peru? At the moment, we are still a little torn as to whether we should continue from Lake Titicaca towards Bolivia or take the somewhat safer...
Lima
Welcome to the next big city: Lima! After the high mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, we treat ourselves to a contrast back to civilization. The differences are really impressive, in Lima we find many things that we had missed a little in the northern and rural areas...
Machu Picchu
To crown the world-famous excavation sites in the sacred valley of the Incas, we set off to visit Machu Picchu. For budget-conscious travelers like us, however, it's not so easy to find your way around all the information about Machu Picchu. There are trains that make...
Nazca Lines
As we continue our journey through Peru, we do not miss out on a world-famous phenomenon. In Nasca, there are vast areas in the barren landscape that have been transformed into a unique landscape by the special Nasca lines. Prehistoric cultures carved figures and...
North coast of Peru & Trujillo
And once again it's the following time of our trip: A new country – welcome to Peru! We travel in from the north from Ecuador and visit the north coast of Peru first. As always, we first have to find our way around a new country. This is easier from a fixed base, so...
Paracas nature reserve
The landscapes in Peru can really win us over. The desert-like landscapes in the Paracas nature reserve briefly transport us into a Bedouin dream. Sandy tracks lead us to the picturesque cliffs of the Paracas peninsula. Here, rugged cliffs define the last meters of...
Sacred Valley of the Incas
The Sacred Valley of the Incas stretches around the city of Urubamba. The characteristic Inca terraces can already be seen in many places from the road on our way. The Inca terraces were artificially built into the steep and barren to rocky slopes and were primarily...
The Andes south of Cusco
Our journey now takes us through one of the highest parts of the passable Andes. We explore the Andes in a south-easterly direction as seen from Cusco, drive through the dwindling, high-altitude valleys and finally end up on the Altiplano – the high plateau – which...
