A half year of vanlife – these are the numbers

by | Mar 20, 2023 | trip planning | 0 comments

Time flies just like that, we have been traveling for half a year already. Besides all the countless, great experiences, we of course also find it exciting how our lives have changed. You can see that very well in numbers. So here are some numbers of our journey so far.

Countries

We have visited 6 countries in the last 6 months (if you count England, Scotland and Wales separately, it was even 8).

Distance

In this time, we have covered 13’959km with our bus Ben.

4894km in Spain (of which 2141km on the Canary Islands)
3535km in Scotland
2487km in France
2084km in England
577km in Wales
180km in Belgium
157km in Switzerland
45km in Luxembourg

⇒ On average we drove 75km per day.

Overnight stays

In total there are 183 nights so far.

143 of them we stayed wild
33 on a camping site
7 we have spent in an AirBnB

⇒ In the middle of nature, it is just the most beautiful.

93 of all nights we were in Spain,
35 in Scotland
29 in England
16 in France
5 in Switzerland
4 in Wales
1 in Belgium
0 in Luxembourg

⇒ We spent the cold winter in warm Spain.

Spending

In total we spent 15’800 CHF in the last 6 months.

20% for public transport (incl. ferries) + parking fees, tolls
18% for grocery shopping
18% for fuel (diesel, AdBlue & LPG)
18% for eating out in restaurants
9% for sightseeing
8% for camping
6% for household incl. mobile data and health costs
3% for other

⇒ Food is definitely our #1 priority with a total of 36%.

Sightseeing

In half a year we took 11200 photos and wrote 126 blog posts in English and German, with 14 still in the planning stages for this time.

We visited 41 churches (18 of them were cathedrals!)

14 of them in England
11 in France
9 in Spain
5 in Scotland
2 in Wales
0 in Belgium
0 in Luxembourg
0 in Switzerland

England has simply the most beautiful churches.

In total we visited 23 castles (incl. ruins)

11 in Scotland
4 in England
4 in Spain
3 in Wales
1 in France
0 in Belgium
0 in Luxembourg
0 in Switzerland

⇒ Probably no country comes close to the density of castles of Scotland.

Itinerary

The itinerary, after a rough plan of the countries, has been refined little by little until we found the effective itinerary. We continue to keep it that way. Thus, we have a high flexibility and can move on completely depending on our daily feeling, extend interesting stops or insert sport activities.

Below is the travel route in a time lapse for you to see – 6 months in 30 seconds.

If you are also preparing for such an adventure, we hope to be able to give you a clue about routes and expenses. For all those who want to know right away what we have experienced, we can warmly recommend our blog posts. If you like our blog and you would like to read and see more of us, we would be very happy if you would like to support us. Often we sit for hours in coffee shops, write our blog, sort out pictures and edit them. That’s quite a large number of coffees together. Maybe you would like to buy us one or two?

About us

We are Paddy and Mimi, a travel-hungry couple from tiny Switzerland in the middle of Europe. We call ourselves slow travelers, because we like to spend enough time in one place or country. Therefore we don’t only visit the typical sights but also get to know the culture of the respective country.
