Coming from the Pyrenees, we orient ourselves again on the Mediterranean coast to continue northward. Near Narbonne there are impressive large lagoons fed by rivers and the Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, shipping canals are very present in this region of France. This theme comes into play especially in Béziers: we visit a 9-stage lock! A highlight especially for Paddy.
Secluded pitch directly on the Canal du Midi
We find a wonderful place directly between vines and the Canal du Midi via an app with overnight possibilities. Only the tourist boats on the canal provide variety during the day. Otherwise, we enjoy the tranquility of the rural area and spend two nights at this idyllic place.
The Canal du Midi connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean Sea. From Toulouse there is another canal which leads to the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore, it is possible to go by boat from the Mediterranean Sea through France to the Atlantic coast. Impressive how much of engineering is necessary for this. We will have a closer look at the technical necessities at our next stop in Béziers.
Fonséranes locks near Béziers
The Fonséranes lock staircase near Béziers is an impressive structure that is necessary for the operation of the Canal du Midi. The staircase dates back to the 17th century and overcomes with several lock chambers – originally nine, today still seven lock chambers are in operation – a height difference of 13.6m.
We take an idyllic walk along the canal towards the lock stairs. We are surprised that there seems to be very little activity on the canal. From our campground at the canal, we had remembered that during the day there are quite regularly ships. However, exactly as we reach the lock three ships are let down from above over the lock staircase. Perfect! Right behind them the next three ships enter the lock. The operation of the lock makes the visit much more exciting and we can watch the ships and their boatmen during their passage through the lock.
City center of Béziers
The city center of Béziers is very well maintained and invites you to linger. There are not as many attractions in Béziers as in other small towns in the south of France, but the town itself is all the more inviting for us. Through the alleys of Béziers we find our way to the Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire. This cathedral is not very fancy compared to other cathedrals and seems rather gloomy to us. The location and surroundings of the cathedral are much more impressive.
Béziers is situated directly on the river Orb on a small hill. The cathedral is enthroned above the riverbank on the other side of an old Roman bridge. This sight is magnificent!
We slowly notice the more pronounced Roman influence again. Following in the footsteps of the Romans and the Catholic faith, our journey continues over the next few days in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
