Colombia
Welcome to Colombia!
Bienvenidos a Colombia!
We are traveling to our first country in South America. As we are traveling from north to south, it is obviously Colombia. There is a lot to see in Colombia. It is considered the country with the second greatest biodiversity, just behind Brazil, in a much smaller area. It comes as no surprise that Colombia has many national parks that protect its impressive nature. Colombia is also known for its musicality and its artists. And finally, there is a unique game that is considered a national sport: The Tejo. Perhaps we can unravel the myth surrounding the Tejo on our trip.
Come along, get on board and enjoy the country in all its glory with our travel blogs from Colombia. Let’s discover Colombia together!
Barichara
In somewhat longer stages, we continue from the Caribbean coast towards the southwest. We drive via Mompox through Bucaramanga to Barichara. We do these stretches in several daily stages because we don't want to drive into the night any longer than necessary. In other...
Bogotá
Our journey continues towards the real mega-city: Bogotá. With almost 8 million inhabitants, the capital of Colombia has about as many inhabitants as the whole of Switzerland! We are curious to see what a city of millions in Colombia feels like, sounds like and what...
Cartagena
And finally: we are in South America! Although we still have to manage without Ben's campervan for a few days, we are full of anticipation and the first impressions from Cartagena already confirm that many wonderful experiences await us in South America. In Cartagena,...
Cocora – Valley of the wax palms
From Salento, it is only a short detour to the Cocora Valley. This valley is world-famous for its wax palms, which can grow up to 60 meters high. The wax palm is also the national tree of Colombia, and we passed countless such palms on the way from Ibagué to Salento,...
Department of Boyacá
Now we have finally escaped the heat of the Colombian coast and are visiting the higher region of Boyacá. Here we are consistently traveling between 2000 and 3000 m above sea level. This makes the nights really cool and the days pleasantly warm with up to 28°C in the...
Guatapé – a rock in a lake landscape
On the way from Bogotá to Medellín, we pass a striking rock. Not quite on the direct route, but small detours are part of the charm of a camper trip. We turn off the main road and head for Guatapé. Unfortunately, as we drive through the village in our campervan Ben,...
Jardín
Welcome to the hiking paradise of Colombia. Jardín is perfect for shorter, easier day hikes around the village. Jardín is also one of the most beautiful villages in Colombia – or so it seems to us.Cozy village life We come to Jardín expressly to relax, as we could do...
Medellín
Medellín is another major city in Colombia and we are following in the footsteps of Pablo Escobar's rise and fall. The city was heavily influenced by the inglorious historical circumstances of the cartel wars and we can still feel and see the after-effects today....
Nevado del Ruiz
The ultimate test of altitude fitness awaits us. We deliberately choose the route from Manizales via the Nevado del Ruiz to Salento in order to spend two nights at over 4000 m on the border of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano national park and test how our campervan Ben...
Pandora Forest
Our adventure in Colombia continues with a real highlight. We visit the Pandora Forest. The name comes from a legend about a lost dog, but parts of the well-known film series Avatar were also filmed in this remote forest. Due to the special local conditions, the karst...
Salento – in the coffee zone of Colombia
We travel further south and now take the coffee route in Colombia. Most of Colombia's coffee-growing regions are located at an altitude of over 1,200 meters and are therefore suitable for Arabica coffee. But more on this in one of the next sections. Salento itself is...
San Agustín
A somewhat different archaeological site awaits us in San Agustín. The region around San Agustín is full of stone figures. Some of the figures carved out of stone are taller than us humans, making them real works of art from a bygone era. In return, we accept the...
Silvia – at the authentic weekly market
Now the intervals between the daily stages are getting a little longer, as we soon want to cross the border into Ecuador. The next stop is in Silvia, a Colombian mountain village in the department of Cauca. A visit to the town is particularly worthwhile on Tuesdays...
Villa de Leyva
One of the most famous places near Bogotá is inevitably Villa de Leyva. On the one hand, Villa de Leyva has a supra-regional appeal thanks to one of the largest city squares in the whole of South America. This is not the only reason why Villa de Leyva is famous; many...
