El Cuyo

At last, after many attempts and a few minor and bearable setbacks, we have found THE Caribbean beach campsite in El Cuyo. By chance, we decided to go to El Cuyo at short notice to have a few simple days. We drove to the fishing village without any great expectations and are now completely thrilled!

El Cuyo is located in the Ria Lagartos nature reserve, a lagoon in the immediate vicinity of the sea. This zone is correspondingly important as a refuge for many bird species and as a breeding ground for sea turtles. Tourism in El Cuyo has probably not been on the rise for long. We do find a few larger hotels (with 10 or a maximum of 20 rooms according to our estimates), but fortunately the coast here is really not yet covered in concrete. We can drive our camper Ben directly from the harbor to within a few meters of the sea. Fine, white sand, turquoise blue water, lots of birds and so close to the harbor: countless fishing boats that leave every morning and return in the evening.

We have been longing for a place like this for several weeks. The constant breeze makes the stay quite pleasant despite the 32° C temperature. And as we write these lines, we can pause again and again to look out through the open side door to the sea and enjoy the magnificent view.

There is little to do in El Cuyo. It seems as if the only activity here, apart from visiting nature, is kitesurfing. However, despite the good wind, it is not yet the season and there is not much going on on the water. Accordingly, we also take it very easy: Walks on the beach and one or two refreshments in one of the restaurants in the village, that’s the whole program. We almost feel as if we’ve shipped ourselves off to a Caribbean Island with our camper Ben. Unique!

And please: If other campers read this report: Be self-sufficient to the extent that no waste has to fly out of the car or waste water is dumped on the beach. You should at least have a toilet with you so that the friendly mood of the local residents doesn’t soon change and no more campers are allowed to stand freely near the beach!

Often we sit for hours in coffee shops, write our blog, sort out pictures and edit them. That’s quite a large number of coffees together. Maybe you would like to buy us one or two?

We are Paddy and Mimi, a travel-hungry couple from tiny Switzerland in the middle of Europe. We call ourselves slow travelers, because we like to spend enough time in one place or country. Therefore we don’t only visit the typical sights but also get to know the culture of the respective country.
