Girona

Continuing our journey to the northeastern part of Spain, we arrive in Girona as our next destination. A beautiful old town with many alleys and a cathedral attracts us to the city. And by the way, an old town with many cafes and small stores is simply inviting by itself.

Old town of Girona

In the historic center of Girona we walk through the old alleys. The ancient style of the buildings is mostly preserved and many streets in the old town are made with old cobblestones. As a result, we ourselves have the impression that we have left our horse at the gates and can now stop in Girona for a well-deserved rest in our shining knight’s armor.
The impression is not deceiving. Especially for movie fans, many memories of the series Game of Thrones are awakened. Several scenes were shot in Girona because of the very old buildings and their medieval appearance.

Girona Cathedral

In Girona, the cathedral was built in Romanesque and Gothic styles. Especially the main facade was added later after several centuries of its existence. Thus, the side of the main entrance looks very new and well-kept in contrast to the rest of the cathedral, where we can see the ageing a little. In front of the cathedral, a long, wide baroque staircase leads up to the main entrance. Inside the cathedral, the engaging impression continues. At 23m, Girona Cathedral has the world’s widest Gothic nave. Inside, as is often the case with the Gothic style, the church appears rather gloomy to the visitor. However, the large rooms counteract this. The round, colored stained-glass windows contrast the dark walls in a welcome change. There are several magnificent chapels and altars in the cathedral. These further counteract the dark appearance of the cathedral.

City wall of Girona

As we continue our walk through the old town, we climb the city wall of Girona near the university. The part we can walk on is not very long and the view is always interrupted by the modern university. Also otherwise, the cityscape from the city wall does not really work. Therefore, we rather quickly go back to the old town, where we spend the afternoon before we go to our last destination in Spain for the time being.

If you like our blog and you would like to read and see more of us, we would be very happy if you would like to support us. Often we sit for hours in coffee shops, write our blog, sort out pictures and edit them. That’s quite a large number of coffees together. Maybe you would like to buy us one or two?
