The caves, or grutas, of Cacahuamilpa are enormously impressive. Further down, directly at the main entrance, a river leads past the caves. This river used to flow underground through the caves, which contributed to their enormous size. Gradually the caves were eroded and grew to their present size. To illustrate the size in numbers: The cave is several 10m high everywhere, in one of the largest chambers open to the public the ceiling height is even over 70m. The width is also unimaginably wide: between 50m to several hundred meters, all widths are there. And now to the length: The tourist round tour through the cave is about 2km long, up to the apex. Effectively, we walk about 4km in the sparsely lit cave.
During the tour, the guide keeps turning on the lighting for the next section, thus showcasing the most impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations, as well as special sections of the cave walls.
The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa are really a superlative in terms of caves. Impressive rock formations and an atmosphere like from another planet make the visit an unforgettable experience. We are absolutely thrilled and would do the cave walk again despite the rather large group size, about 40 people in the off-season during our visit.
After this exploration in the northern mountain landscape of Guerrero, we have quite a bit of driving ahead of us towards the southeast. We cover about 500km of distance and drive the first part after spending half the day in one of the caves of Cacahuamilpa. Accordingly, we make two daily stages out of the 500km. Soon we will report from the next stop on our trip through Central America!
