Nauyaca waterfalls

Quickly we reach the west coast of Costa Rica. The well-developed main roads here make driving much quicker than in other Central American countries we have already visited! We have planned a few more stops on the Pacific coast, one of which is the Nauyaca waterfalls. These waterfalls are said to be the most beautiful in the whole of Costa Rica. Of course, this arouses our curiosity and we head for the waterfalls.

Moderate ascent to the Nauyaca waterfalls

The hike starts at the visitor parking lot and leads along a relatively wide, but little-used, unpaved road to the actual waterfall. On the way, we cover around 250 meters in altitude and a few kilometers. The path is not particularly interesting, after all, this stop is all about the waterfalls. At one point we are lucky and discover a well-camouflaged, exotic frog. It has a distinctive angular shaped face and its brown-green body color perfectly camouflages itself as a leaf, ideal in nature.

The waterfalls are divided into two parts. There is an upper and a lower waterfall in the same course of the river. During our visit, the water was a little cloudy due to recent rainfall and so the brown water flows over the cliffs and plunges into the depths. The waterfall is large and impressive in its own way, but it does not stand out from all the waterfalls we have already seen.
At the lower waterfall, the natural pool is a little larger and all visitors are allowed to swim in it. Some people accept the cooling, but we are not really drawn to the murky water today. We record a few longer impressions in our memories and as fast as we arrive, we are already on our way back to the parking lot. That’s okay – not every single stop is meant to be the top of the top compared to the rest of the whole world.

The facilities around the waterfall are exemplary. There are taps to fill up with drinking water. Great! There is also a shower after the hike at the parking lot, which is included in the entrance fee. We treat ourselves to this cool-down after the walk, which is not very strenuous, but the high humidity makes us sweat a lot, nevertheless.

Now we are drawn to a cozy pitch right by the sea to organize our next travel plans in the next national parks. We’ll report back on our blog as usual – our next stop will be a real highlight for us!

We are Paddy and Mimi, a travel-hungry couple from tiny Switzerland in the middle of Europe. We call ourselves slow travelers, because we like to spend enough time in one place or country. Therefore we don’t only visit the typical sights but also get to know the culture of the respective country.
