Tulum is a Mayan site that is particularly famous for its location. It is located directly by the sea and some ruins still overlook the Caribbean Sea off the coast of the Yucatán peninsula. We arrive early at the archaeological zone so that we can avoid the crowds of tourists at least a little bit.
At 8 am we set off on a short walk from the parking lot to the ruins on the beach. We think we are among the first ten visitors that day to buy an entry ticket for Tulum and explore the ruins. One of the special features of the Tulum complex is the partially reconstructed city wall. The main complex was surrounded by stone walls to ensure optimal control of access to the city center and the various temples. The buildings themselves are rather plain, but for us, as for many of the visitors, the special location of the ruins takes center stage. The scenery is unique: the stone ruins stand on rocky cliffs directly above the fine, white sandy beach.
We tried to capture these impressions as good as possible in the photos before getting into our camper Ben to drive on towards the Mexican border.
Our next country, Belize, is waiting for us. And we are looking forward to our impressions of the country, which still belongs to the British crown but is in a perpetual dispute with Guatemala over its affiliation to Guatemala. It is also our first time crossing the border in Central America with our camper Ben. We are used to crossing foreign borders (remembering our trip to Asia in 2017), but with our own car? We remain optimistic, as we are not the first people to do this!
